Wiltshire-based glass blower and neon artist Katherine Huskie has been working in glass for over 15 years. Her glass experimentation began in college, and she subsequently graduated from the University of Sunderland with a BA (Hons) in Glass and Ceramics. Since graduating, Katherine has travelled widely, including a stint in Australia where she worked with numerous different glass makers to expand and broaden her skills. On her return to the UK in 2013, she founded Devereux & Huskie Glassworks with James Devereux, where they specialise in creating bespoke glass for designers and artists from around the world.
Recipient of a number of awards and scholarships, Katherine was named Wimbledon Championship Artist of the Year 2018, alongside Nancy Sutcliffe, and was awarded the 2020 QEST (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) scholarship grant, which enabled her to continue training with masters in the art of neon. In 2021 she was invited back to the University of Sunderland in a three-year role as a Visiting Enterprise Fellow.
Katherine has always been interested in pattern, whether within nature, textiles or geometry. She is passionate about manipulating hot glass in order to draw in a viewer and inspire them to interact with the artwork, and is always searching for new influences to see how she can include the patterns in hot glass.
The Echinus series came from my love of manipulating hot glass and its tactile qualities. Sea Urchin shells inspire them. I am fascinated by how every shell is different and how nature has created such beautiful patterns. They have a texture that draws the viewer in, and I wanted to harness this in my glass, balancing out the want to touch with the fragility.
