Molten Landscapes, by Rising Star Bethany Wood, has been a labour of love in glass, developed over the past three years, with the skills and techniques leading to the artist’s well-known signature style.
Bethany initially responded to her intense appreciation of the natural world by producing works in photography and painting, which she then transformed into expressing with glass. This latest iteration within Molten Landscapes ‘Panorama’ captures how Bethany reanimates the composition of landscapes through new expressionistic techniques in a new cylindrical form designed to showcase the texture and refractory qualities of the glass.
These bold and fluent works reflect Bethany’s personality, demonstrated in the new Panorama series close control for the techniques that were once ‘happy accidents’ Bethany describes as ‘taming the lion’. The difficulty of being able to ‘tame the lion’ that is glass; is controlling the processes with timing, thickness, and temperature – to name a few techniques involved in achieving these landscapes of texture.
Panorama debuts a newly unique abstract colour palette, which sets it apart from previous works from the series and is now progressing into a new period of oversaturated, metallic landscapes. Bethany’s approach will constantly be developing, and the idea is that the concept is ever-changing, just like the very nature of the landscape.
In Bethany’s words
‘Serendipity of abstraction has always been an inspiration for me; the coincidental elements which catch the eye of the viewer. The palette, composition and depth I have attained are taken from nature, with a bold but elegant swipe of my expressionist style.
If I were not an artist, I would have been a performer. Instead, I chose glass, which I believe is a performance of art; both disciplines create the same energy. There is rhythm and adrenaline in glassmaking within a carefully planned routine.

Multi-disciplinary artist Bethany Wood is the founder and director of Blowfish Glass. After graduating from De Montfort in 2014 with a Design Crafts degree, specialising in hot glass, Bethany spent several years developing and refining her skills with a number of renowned glass artists across the UK. She launched her Molten Landscapes series in 2020 and has exhibited with many high-end galleries and interior designers internationally, including being commissioned to design a collection for Wonder of the Seas, the flagship of Royal Caribbean.
Taking inspiration from the world around us, Bethany’s work combines elements of the inner city and expansive landscapes, exploring themes like urban culture, graffiti and travel. Her glass-making practice is influenced by her passions for painting and performance, treating the glass as a canvas on which molten colours recreate the fleeting nature of brush strokes. This hybrid approach forms
spontaneous watery and lava-like relief flourishes, relishing in the serendipity of abstraction
