The choice of a taboo occupies a special place in human culture. It destroys or violates the binary division between natural and cultural given features of human life.
In Spruzinová’s stories, sexual connotations simultaneously oscillate around ubiquitous death. Death can be detected, for example, from the action of one of the objects, if we imagine its completion. It’s actually an exaggeration, which we can understand as part of a joke. A joke we won’t laugh at.

Michaela Spruzinová is a Czech glass artist based in Ústí nad Labem. She studied at Ilja Bílek’s glass studio and
pursued curatorial studies at the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně in Ústí
nad Labem, and now works as an assistant in the glass design department at University Tomás Bata in Zlín. She
also runs an open gallery space, Deska, which represents public art interventions. She doesn’t have a
professional studio, instead she creates her works in her small basement.
Michaela likes to work in contemporary art fields, where there are no limits to materials like glass.
She likes to create site-specific installations in combination with other mediums including airbrush, graffiti and
foam-moulding.
Michaela explains; “I’m aiming to tell stories with my installations. Thin strands of glass are drawn
from bigger strips, which form the design components of my pieces which are recycled for a second life.
Recycling glass is one of my basic philosophical attitudes on how not to overwhelm a living space. The long
hours spent on the process of preparing the semi-finished components for my artworks gives me the
opportunity to re-evaluate the importance of life situations, values and relationships. I dissect and caricature
these experiences in my work, developing my interpretive skills and understanding of the world.”
