Naturally Focused IV - Alison Stott

Alison Stott is a glass and light artist whose practice explores the intersection of art and science, craft and technology, and embodied perception. After more than two decades in digital visual effects for film and television, she turned to glassblowing to investigate physical light phenomena through direct material engagement. Combining intuitive hot-glass processes with precision technologies and scientific research, her work makes visible the unseen structure of light through interactive sculptural forms and immersive installations.
Naturally Focused IV is part of an ongoing series developed in conversation with physicist Sir Michael Berry, exploring the intra-action of light and glass. Created especially for Blowfish 15×15, this work draws from historical scientific instruments and sundials, with engraved mathematics describing caustic singularities and markings reminiscent of a clock face. Mounted on a rotating base, the piece can be repositioned to catch and focus light, activating evolving projections and shifting optical phenomena through viewer interaction.
Her wall-based lens installation Naturally Focused I is permanently displayed in the University of Bristol Physics Department. Her work has been exhibited at London Glassblowing Gallery and will be shown at the British Glass Biennale and the Glass Art Society exhibition at the International Festival of Glass in 2026.
