Tim Rawlinson’s fascination with the way light passes through glass informs his work. He exploits transparency, as its essential and primary quality, manipulating and distorting both colour and form in order to challenge his viewer’s perceptions.

After graduating from Bucks New University in 2011 with a degree in Ceramics and Glass, Tim
Rawlinson wasted no time before diving into the world of UK glass. That same year, he exhibited his
degree work at New Designers in London, which led to him becoming a resident artist at Peter
Layton’s London Glassblowing studio, a role he has held ever since.
Over the past decade, Tim’s work has been exhibited widely at shows and competitions around
the world, including the Saatchi Gallery in the UK, the Etienne Gallery in the Netherlands and the
International Glass Prize in Belgium. He has also been a resident artist at Devereux and Huskie since
2018, and in 2020 he opened a new studio, Layton Rawlinson Glass, in collaboration with Peter
Layton.
Tim is fascinated by the refractive and reflective qualities of glass, and exploits transparency in
his art. His designs feature cut and polished sculptural pieces that focus on the interaction between
light and glass, creating dazzling optical effects by distorting colour and form to transform and
enhance their surroundings.
“One of humanity’s tendencies is to attempt to give order and form where there is none,” he
explains. “For instance, how randomly arranged stars are organised into constellations, or how we
perceive shapes in constantly shifting cloud formations. This desire to give form to chaos is an
expression of our imagination. My work invites the viewer to look beyond what is apparent and to
search for the unknown.”
