Symbiosis I - Laura Quinn

Symbiosis I is a self reflective exploration for the artist. Juxtaposing bodies intertwine, rely on each other for support. The soft, vulnerable limbs mould themselves around a hard, impermeable centre.
Laura Quinn is a multi-award-winning artist working in contemporary glass sculpture. A graduate of the National College of Art and Design (2015), she completed her MA at Arts University Plymouth in 2019 and has been Glass Technical Tutor at the University for the Creative Arts since 2020.
Her practice challenges assumptions about glass, exploring its perceived limitations through interactive, often modular works. By introducing movement, her sculptures invite engagement and subtly subvert expectations of fragility.
Quinn’s work has been widely exhibited, including Collect Open 2022, Collect 2025, and the British Glass Biennale in 2022 and 2024. She is a QEST Scholar, and her work is held in the OPW Irish State Art Collection and the Ulster Museum.
Surviving as an artist often means being everything to everybody, at a cost to one’s own creative needs. Symbiosis I is a self-reflective exploration, an attempt to understand the intertwined elements of Quinn’s identity as both artist and educator, each reliant on the other for support. A soft, goose-pimpled, vulnerable body bends and fits around a central, impermeable form that reflects the viewer back at themselves, showing them what they want to see. These bodies are free-moving, but without each other they fall.
